Hello once again! It’s Jessy here back with another layout that I absolutely love. One of my favorite scrapbooking techniques is fussy cutting. When I saw this patterned paper ‘parasol’, I instantly knew that I wanted to cut them out to create my own background. Fussy cutting is very therapeutic for me. If you haven’t tried it, you should!

Fussy Cutting Tips

If you’re asking what is fussy cutting paper, here is the answer. Fussy cutting is using scissors to cut out a design or an image from pattern paper. In other words fussy cutting is trimming out a design, image or motif. The term fussy cutting comes from the intricate details you cut out by hand with scissors.

It’s really important to have the right scissors for fussy cutting. If you use large chunky scissors, you are not able to cut out the small intricate designs from the paper. Instead if you have a good pair of sharp detail scissors, it makes the fussy cutting process much easier and you will have better results. My favorite precision detail scissors are these Easy Action Shears and these Fiskars Fine Scissors.

Fussy cutting does take time so it is a scrapbook technique that requires some patience. However, it is also a therapeutic craft technique for some people and many really enjoy it. It takes a detailed eye and some creative vision to pick out elements that you want to cut out. Use your creativity when fussy cutting and look for any elements that you can cut out. Fussy cutting is a fun technique for floral papers.

How to Make a Cute Scrapbook Layout with Fussy Cutting

• First, I cut the parasols out from the pattern paper and set them aside.
• Next, I wanted to create lines & texture on the white cardstock, so I decided to machine stitch the diagonal lines. I really loved the effect. White thread on white cardstock looks subtle but amazing at the same time.
• I positioned the photos somewhat in the middle and added all the fussy cuttings onto the white cardstock.
• A title and some minimal embellishments completed the layout. I kept this layout clean and simple because of the colorful parasols placed around the layout.

Scrapbooking Tips and Techniques

• To make it more interesting, I snipped some of the lines on the parasols. This gave them texture. Then I placed 3d foam dots behind them to add even more dimension. I really love it!
• Position your photos and embellishments in a way that they compliment and enhance the photo(s). It is fairly important to take some time to think through the design of your scrapbook layout. Then make a little plan on how you want to build those layers as you create!
