Cute DIY Bookmarks

Hey there, it’s Kathleen back with you and I’m quite excited about today’s project because I am so happy with how it turned out!

I decided to create some cute DIY bookmarks with the pretty Sunny Days collection that’s also available at Joann stores. And let me tell you, they are super easy to make so I think they would make for some really cute DIY handmade gifts!

DIY Bookmarks with 2 Variations:

I made two different versions of these cute DIY Bookmarks. The first is a simple bookmark with just paper, stickers and die cuts. The second is a shaker style bookmark for which I used sequins from my craft supplies.

Cute & Easy DIY Bookmark Tutorial:

The simple version is really straight forward. Here are the steps to create it:

1. First cut two paper strips to the desired size (my bookmarks, except the yellow one, are approx. 2″x6″)
2. Next, glue them together back to back to make the bookmark sturdier.
3. Embellish your DIY bookmarks with stickers, die cuts, etc.  Keep in mind that they shouldn’t be too dimensional so they will fit inside a book.
4. Then, punch a whole at the top and reinforce it with an eyelet. Our favorite hole punch to use is this heavy duty hole punch that will go through any material.
5. Finally, string some twine or ribbon through the hole. You can also add a cute charm if you like.

How to Embellish Your Cute DIY Bookmarks:

• When it came to embellishing the bookmarks, I chose die cuts and stickers that said something like “unplug”, “let’s get away” or “this is my happy place”. While these may be obvious choices for vacation-themed projects, I think they fit the theme of reading and “diving” into a book perfectly, too!
• Just remember to use flat embellishments like stickers and die cuts or the bookmarks won’t sit nicely inside your book!

Shaker Style DIY Bookmark Tutorial:

The shaker style version requires a few more steps, but is also really easy. There’s one essential crafting tool you will need to create the shaker element – a Fuse tool or a sewing machine.

1. First cut a regular page protector down to size (approx. 2.25″x6.25″)
2. Next close it on three sides (leaving one long edge open) using a Fuse tool or sewing machine.
3. Cut two paper strips to 2″x6″ and adhere them back to back.
4. Slide the paper strips into the page protector pocket. If you want to embellish them with stickers, do that before sliding them in.
5. Next add some small items to the protector pocket. Things like sequins, small die cuts, punched out confetti etc. work really well for this.
6. Close the open side of the pocket with your Fuse tool or sewing machine.
7. Embellish the outside with stickers if you like.
8. Finally, punch a whole at the top and reinforce it with an eyelet & string some twine or ribbon through.

3 variations of the shaker style DIY Bookmarks:

1. The bookmark above features the beautiful white glitter paper from the Sunny Days project pad (exclusively available at Joann Stores).
2. Second, for the striped one I simply used a patterned paper from the same project pad. (pictured below)
3. The third shaker bookmark (on the right of the photo below) was created with the gold foil pattern sticker in this clear sticker book. I first stuck it to a piece of acetate I had cut to 2″x6″ and trimmed the sticker at the edges. Before sliding it into the shaker pocket, I also added a piece of the wide floral washi tape to fill the lower part of the bookmark.

I had so much fun creating these cute DIY Bookmarks and therefore I am already planning to make some more as gifts for my workshop attendees! I hope you will give this cute DIY craft idea a try, too!
