Hello! Today I’m sharing some more details and pictures from the girls’ room along with tips for styling a bookcase and decorating a room! This little area with the Britt Bass painting and the peachy pink bookcase turned out to be such a happy part of the room!
This shelf/bookcase was one that I found at my favorite antique market a few years back. I love the spindle style of furniture so much and literally can’t get enough! I think I got this piece for around $20! Score!!
It was originally dark brown and I loved it that way and used it as a nightstand in Emily’s room for a long time. I am a huge fan of big chunky nightstands and she had a twin bed so there was plenty of room! However, once we moved Elizabeth in here with Emily, we switched out the twin bed for a full size, which then made the large sized nightstands a little tight. I still wanted to keep this piece in the room though so I moved it across the room on the wall opposite the bed, where I previously didn’t have any furniture.
I also gave it a coat of this soft peachy pink paint and I love how sweet it feels now! I normally love to have some natural wood in a room, especially one that has a lot of painted pieces like we have in here. But this time paint won out! The paint color is Heavenly Song by Behr and it’s the perfect pale peachy pink… isn’t too light but isn’t too saturated either.
I love having a bookcase type of piece in a room because it gives me a spot to decorate and add some cute things. It’s also an area that can be changed out over time as the girls collect new pieces or the style of the room evolves.
The bottom shelf holds this darling blue vintage suitcase that the girls love to store their jewelry and other little treasures in!
I found these vintage brass bookends a while back and couldn’t resist picking them up. I’ve had them in storage for quite a while, waiting for the perfect spot to use them and I love how they look in here and how they pick up on the subtle horse theme we have going.
The top shelf holds some of the girls’ larger Breyer horse figurines. I love that they become part of the decor, but they are also easily accessible when they want to play with them! One of my best tips for bookcase styling is to use things that are different sizes, shapes and textures. By varying those things, you create contrast and interest. The black camera also adds depth and a pop of visual weight against the other soft colors. The flowers add softness to the hard edges of the books and suitcase. While I am a huge fan of having fresh real flowers in our home, it just isn’t realistic, especially here in Arizona. I always keep my eye out for good fake flower options that give me the same look without the upkeep and expense.
The finishing touch for this side of the room is the fabulous Britt Bass painting that I won as part of the giveaway from Mom’s Best Network & Destination Nursery. Choosing from all of her amazing works of art was one of the most difficult parts of putting this room together! There are just so many to love and I could have been happy with any of them. In the end I settled on this one because I love that the dark aqua picks up on the color of the dresser and I also love that this one has multiple shades of pink!
One of the things I definitely recommend when it comes to decorating is to purchase things you love as you find them instead of trying to go out and buy all the decorations at one time. When I see something I’m drawn to, like the horse bookends, I buy them without worrying about where exactly I will put them in our home. Even if they sit in storage for a bit, when it comes time to decorate a room like this, you will already have plenty of things on hand. When I got to the styling stage for this room, I didn’t have to go out searching to buy a bunch of things. Instead I just gathered items that I already had, which not only makes it feel more eclectic and curated but it makes it more personal as well because they are all pieces I love instead of things I ran out and purchased just to fill the space. I’m also a fan of moving things around your home. Just because you bought a decoration for one room doesn’t mean it has to stay there forever. You can shuffle things around from time to time… it makes it feel like you redecorated the space and it’s free! Who doesn’t love that!
