Party Banner DIY

It’s a darling DIY banner that could also double as a DIY party banner. You can easily change the words you create to fit your home decor or to fit any party theme for kids (holidays, seasons, etc). Hey friends, it’s Kathleen here again and today I have a fun project to share with you. Every now and then I get the urge to create a home decoration project, and usually I end up making some kind of banner. I don’t know why, but I just love creating them! This time I was actually inspired by the “Love You” stickers in the Wonderful Thickers set. I thought that they would be perfect to use on a banner: they are colorful, have the perfect size and the perfect length for it. Oh, and make sure to read through till the end to see how else you can use this banner, other than for decoration.

Since every letter is a different color, I wanted to make the banner equally colorful! I selected some papers in pink, green, blue, yellow and purple – the same colors that are in the letters – from the 12×12 papers and also from the 6×8 Basics Paper Pad and cut the banners using a die from my stash and a die cutting machine. The shape is very simple, so you could easily cut them by hand if you don’t have a similar die.You could make a template (either draw it by hand or print one out) from cardstock and use it to draw the shape on your papers and then cut them out. I also die cut seven scalloped circles from plain vellum to layer beneath the letters and make them stand out from the patterned papers. I also made sure to pick patterns that are a little more neutral. I think, since there are so many different ones, it’s important not to overdo it with the patterns and colors.I kept the embellishing minimal because, again, I didn’t want to overload the banner. But luckily there are lots of super cute small embellishments in the Willow Lane collection! I used a few of the adorable puffy stickers, some sparkly golden hearts from the Wonderful Thickers set, and also two larger animal pieces from the chipboard stickers. To add a little more color and fun to the banners, I machine stitched along the top edge in different colors of thread.For the first and last banner I used the packaging from some of the embellishments in the Willow Lane collection – the wood veneer pattern is a perfect neutral and the paper is a little bit thicker than the patterned paper. And you can see here, why this may come in handy:You can turn the banner into a mini album! That way the wood veneer look pages will function as the front cover and back cover of the mini album. Just make sure that you put some patterned paper on the reverse of the packaging to hide that side, and if you used papers from the paper pads for the banners as well, since they are only single-sided.

The only thing you need to do to turn the banner into a mini album, is take out the ribbon or twine you used to hang it and put in some book binding rings. It’s super easy, cute, and that way you can reuse the home decoration when you don’t want to have it up on your walls anymore 😉I hope this project inspires you to make your own! You can easily adapt this to your needs, e.g. change the colors, size, number of pages, etc. You could, for instance, also make one that spells “Hooray!” using the one of the Thickers sets from the Willow Lane collection as party decoration and then later, fill it with photos from the celebration 🙂
