Paper Fan Banner Tutorial

One of my favorite ways to decorate for a birthday party is with paper fan party decorations. There are so many uses for them – you can fill a whole wall with them or you can create a party banner with them like I’ve done here.

You really can transform a space so quickly with this simple easy DIY party decor and today I am going to show you how to make paper fan pinwheels (with pictures). You will be a pro in no time!

Easy Paper Fan Party Decorations Backdrop Tutorial

Materials:

• 12 x 12 Paper – I used a mix of the Sunny Days paper
• Scoring Tool & Score Guide – Score Board & Bone Folder
• Hot Glue Gun
• Cardboard / Heavy Chipboard
• Ribbon

Instructions:

1. Choose 2 sheets of 12×12 paper.
2. Score both sheets at each 1″ increment. (This is where the Score Board comes in handy!)

3. Fold both papers accordion style using your score lines for nice crisp folds.
4. Glue the inside ends of your 2 sheets together to create a long accordion rectangle.

5. Refold accordion style so all ends are flat and folds are held tightly together at the center.
6. Holding the center, bring the two bottom ends down to meet in the center and glue together.

7. On the flat side, there will be some excess folds that are loose. Glue each of these down in the front and the back of the paper folds.

8. Cut a piece of cardboard or heavy chipboard to 12″ x 1″ and glue onto a length of ribbon. (If this is your first fan on the garland, leave approximately 24″ of ribbon at the end for hanging purposes. If this is not your first fan, you can attach the cardboard strip right next to the previous fan, or you can leave a few inches to space them out slightly.)

9. Glue flat part of fan to the other side of the cardboard. (Do not glue the fan to the ribbon side. When you are done, the cardboard should be sandwiched between the ribbon and the fan. The cardboard makes your DIY garland nice and sturdy and the ribbon finishes it off so that the top is pretty.

10. Repeat steps 1-9 with different papers until you have the length you desire for your garland.

11. Repeat steps 1-10 to make multiple garlands if you want to create a cute DIY party backdrop.
12. Layer and hang the garlands for a unique and custom party background that your guests will love!
