Workshops
March 4th - April 13th, 2013
The advanced course is the perfect follow-up to Photography 101. In the first course you learn how to get the best possible image straight out of camera. Now, in the advanced class you will take your skills to a higher level and learn how to edit your photographs so that they will look even more magical! It also covers things like advanced lighting, when/how to use your external flash and information on going pro! Video tutorials are also included so you can see exactly how I edit!
Workshop Details: The advanced workshop is a 6 week online course that covers each of the following topics in detail:
Perfecting the Shoot: Go behind the scenes of a Maggie Holmes photo shoot – how and why I choose my locations, how I connect with my clients, how and why I choose my props, tips for working with clients of different ages and how a typical photo shoot flows. All of these things are the same whether I am photographing clients or my own children so the techniques apply to a wide range of photographers.
Advanced Lighting: Topics will include how and why I use reflectors, when I use my external flash and how to make it work for you without looking like flash photography. I will also take you behind the scenes as I set up a natural light studio in my own home without expensive backdrops, lights or even a designated space.
Perfecting the Image: I will take you through my post-processing workflow from uploading my images to receiving the prints. Topics will include file management, Photoshop, Lightroom and Adobe RAW. I will cover the techniques I use on a daily basis in each of the mentioned programs. I will show you my tips and tricks for producing the best possible images with the least amount of work.
Photoshop Creativity: There are times when an image calls for some extra creative attention and there are also times when it can be fun to simply play around and take an image to another level. Topics include applying textures to your images, adding color overlays, playing with and creating your own actions, etc. I will also show you how to create your own greeting cards and storyboards.
Going Pro: Whether you are looking to go big or just looking to do a few shoots a year, I cover all of the things you are dying to ask us professionals. Topics include how much to charge, when and how to take the leap, how I market myself, etc.
Finding Your Style: Perhaps the most important aspect of it all (whether you are going pro or just wanting to take better pictures of your family) is finding and maintaining YOU in your photographic style. I will help you look deeper into the creative side of your photography and set you on your way to making your own mark.
There will also be an exclusive message board for class members where you can share your photos, critique each other, share ideas and ask me questions. This is where you will post your weekly assignments and get detailed feedback from me. Perhaps the most beneficial aspect of the workshop is the chance to getpersonalized and individual attention each week! I am here to help you through each and every concept!
Photoshop and Lightroom are the programs I use and will be teaching from. You do NOT have to purchase Photoshop or Lightroom to take the course. If you have PSE, you will still be able to do a lot of the things I teach, but not everything. I highly recommend downloading the 30 day free trials of PS and LR right before we get to that point in the class. That way you can follow along, learn all the techniques and then decide if it is worth the investment for you. Again, please note that I do NOT teach Photoshop Elements. If you decide to stick with PSE, there are often other class members that are familiar with the program and know where/how to perform the same functions within that platform to help you during class.
The Fine Print: Payment in full is due at time of registration and is non-refundable. Class size is limited and spots are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Again class fees are non-refundable so make sure that you have the time and ability to commit to the class before registering. If something happens which makes it impossible for you to participate during the scheduled class dates, you understand that you will not receive a refund for the class. You will have all of the class materials and it will be up to you to complete the course on your own when time permits.
The editing portions of the class are taught within Photoshop and Lightroom but they are not required for the course. You can download the free trials and still follow along with everything I teach before you decide to purchase.
