Hello!! Today Kim has a gorgeous new scrapbook page for us with a watercolor heart theme. I adore Kim’s style and love that she always finds a way to include her passion for painting on her layouts. Following her lead and finding an element that you love is a great way to define and create your own personal style when it comes to scrapbooking.
Finding Your Style >> As artists sometimes we feel inclined to reinvent the wheel and come up with something entirely new and different every time we sit down to create. But, I find that the artists I admire the most don’t actually do that. While their work is continually interesting and fresh each time, they also have a distinct style that is carried through from project to project or page to page. In Kim’s case it’s her use of watercolors and painted elements. It’s not to say that we shouldn’t continue to push ourselves artistically and try new techniques and new mediums but I also find it comforting that I can feel completely secure in repeating certain design elements and using the things I love over and over and over again. It’s what will make your work distinguishable to you and it will also allow you to work with more of a flow each time you sit down to create. Start with the things you love and that are familiar and that will get you going. Then as you start building your page or project you can try new things and you’ll find that the creativity and ideas will happen very naturally!
Hi everyone, lately I’ve been inspired by hearts, which led me to want to create this fun layered heart page. As you know I’m also always painting, which means that I have a lot of practice paintings and scraps with watercolors on them. I’m a big user of all my scraps so nothing really gets thrown away, even my practice paintings. Today I’m going to show you how to make these watercolor heart embellishments using up your scraps!
Quick Tip >> Here’s a great way to use up your scraps! As I said I keep all of my practice paintings. Then when I want to create a scrapbook page, I just pull out a punch (I’ve used this heart punch for my page) and I punch out a handful of that shape from the scraps I have laying around. This is an easy way to create fun DIY embellishments to layer on my pages. You’ll notice on my layout that I punched some hearts from my paintings which resulted in the watercolor hearts and then I also punched some out of the confetti papers.
I don’t like for my pages to be too involved, so taking one element and repeating it on my pages is a constant design element or style that I like to use. It makes for quick fun pages! Another element of my personal style is that I seem to have to find a way to include watercolor or acrylic paints in my work each time and punching out these hearts is perfect! So, I encourage you to pull out those scraps and see them in different ways. Use them in scrap journals, on mixed media pages or collages and don’t be afraid to turn them into something entirely new using your punches! Have a great day guys!
