Painting Tips from Kim

Hello! Hope you are doing well!! Today we have a beautiful new scrapbook page to share with you from design team member, Kim. She is one of my very favorites when it comes to painting and watercolor so when she shares tips, I am all ears! We all make mistakes when it comes to our art or crafts, but it’s good to remember that every “mistake” is actually a learning experience and a way for us to grow in our creativity! I love that Kim is sharing a mistake she made when it comes to watercoloring on your pages, so that we can also learn from her trial and error. Thanks Kim!! Read on to find out what NOT to do when you are using watercolored paper with your Silhouette Cameo or similar electronic die cut machine.

One of the things I like most about scrapbooking is that it allows me to explore different materials and get an idea for what I like.  I can figure out what papers can take a little or a lot of paint, which cardstock allows me to use watercolors on it, also which papers cut the best on my Silhouette.  I had a little bit of a challenge before completing this page.  I wanted to paint on some of the cardstock and then cut flowers out wit my cutting machine and my first try didn’t go so well.  I’m pretty impatient so I attempted to cut before my pages were dried thoroughly and ended up shredding my poor flowers.  Paint dries fairly quickly, but to cut watercolored paper, it definitely has to dry completely before you try to cut it!I used a small amount of gesso to paint on this pretty bird paper.  I like white space but I also love a bit of the paper peeking through.  I kept this page light and airy and just used a few of the paper cuts to add a little spring to my page.  I love the bright bits of green that appear on some of the edges.

One of my favorite things, besides using paint, is the surprise result you get from cutting elements from painted papers.  All it requires is getting your hands a bit messy!  The end result is always a lovely page with a subtle mixed media effect! Have a great day! Happy Tuesday!
