We took Nathan to his appt. yesterday at the Primary Children’s Opthalmologist. Good and bad news…
The anatomy of his eyes is fine – no irregularities or anything weird going on. But, he is behind on where he should be as far as his vision goes. The doctor called it developmental delay of vision.
The doctor was holding this black and white striped cylinder thing in front of him for a few minutes – moving it around and watching Nathan’s eyes. Nathan never would look at it or focus on it. He would just look from side to side and everywhere else but the thing. The doctor said that he should be focusing on things and even following them if they move by now, but he doesn’t.
He said that it could just be that his vision is developing slow – like how some kids learn to walk more slowly than others or they may take longer to learn to read, etc. If we don’t start seeing improvement in the next 6 weeks, he said it could be something in his brain that is not processing what he sees. In that case they will do an MRI of his brain and see if they can tell what is going on.
So…. only time will tell. We go back in 6 weeks to see if he is making progress. I am worried but also feel pretty hopeful… hoping that he is just behind and that he will catch up.
In the meantime we are doing more to try to "stimulate" his vision — the Dr. said that he might need vision therapy and more visual stimulation than other children to help him along.
Thanks to all of you who have commented or emailed me and for your thoughts and prayers. We really appreciate it and I know that it helps!! I often feel that my struggles are so minute compared to others and what they have to endure, especially right now with the destruction of Hurricane Katrina and all the lives it has affected. I am thankful for my blessings and all that I have and I am most grateful for friends and family who take the time to be there even if my problems are small in comparison.
