If you read this post, you know that in my book, kindness is one of those simple, yet very important virtues. Small and simple acts of kindness can be game changers in lots of ways for all of us! So I wanted to share another little saying about kindness that I really love.

I came across this a few years back and it immediately resonated with me because it is a great reminder to me that we shouldn’t wait for someone to be kind to us in order for us to be kind to them. I think that often times, especially with kids and sadly even us adults, we tend to resort to the excuse of justifying our unkindness or lack of kindness because the other person was unkind to us first. It’s that thing we hear over and over when raising kids and trying to encourage and teach siblings to get along – “well she was rude to me first”, or “he started it” etc etc! Right!?! And even though our first inclination is usually to snap back when someone is unkind, the best way to diffuse contention or to change the mood is to respond with kindness.
I’m definitely not perfect at this because I’m as human as the next person, but this little phrase helps me to remember to be better and to be the one that stops the argument or unkindness by being kind. When I step back and try to look at things from a bigger perspective I realize that the mood in our home definitely is affected by whether I respond or react to things with kindness or with irritation, impatience etc. It seems so simple and yet pretty profound at the same time when I acknowledge this fact and take responsibility to work on my own kindness and my own demeanor first before I jump in and try to correct or change the sibling rivalry and little spats our children have. I notice that when I’m unhappy in general or short with them, they unfortunately follow suit most of the time and none of us are very kind or fun to be around. But then on the flip side, it’s pretty great to see that the happiness level in our home can be greatly increased by me simply choosing to work on being more happy and kind myself! It all truly begins with me!
So for me, this saying is just the perfect little reminder of everything I’ve tried to relay here and in this other post about kindness, but in the most concise and simplest form… that spreading kindness, whether out in the world or right in my own home is up to me and that when I choose to begin the kindness, the effects are lasting and the kindness is not only usually returned, but also perpetuated and spread further on down the line… and that is a beautiful thing!
P.S. How cute is little Henry above! I was taking some marketing pictures of this sign for Magnet Studio and he went and got his little toy camera so he could take pictures too! I couldn’t resist snapping a few of him so I would have this memory forever! Being able to do my work at home with our kiddos right by my side is truly a gift and a treasure that I don’t take for granted! It makes it all that much more meaningful and rewarding for me!
