Hello there! I recently teamed up with Chasing Paper to try out their modern and stylish removable wallpaper as part of their small space challenge. They gave me 12 panels of the paper of my choice to transform any space in my home. The possibilities started flooding my mind and then I quickly settled on this area in our formal dining room because it is a space that I have never completely loved. The room in general is not necessarily a small space, but the cut-out in the wall fit the parameters so that’s what I decided on.
They have a LOT of fabulous modern wallpaper patterns that are fresh and spot on with the current trends! It was honestly hard to decide on one and I especially LOVE the chalkpaper wallpaper but decided that would be too informal for the space. I’m toying with the idea of using that one in the playroom of our new house that we just started building. For the dining room, I went with this black and white speckle pattern that has a hip and trendy vibe but that can also feel very classic and a bit elegant when paired with the right decor.
I was so excited to get started that I forgot to take a picture of the space before but I did get a couple of in progress shots. When we moved in, there was a giant mirror on this wall. You can see where it was in the image below where the orangey-tan paint was. I always hated the mirror because it was just an odd placement to me and it was also not framed. It was like a huge bathroom mirror that they put there to take up the space. In an effort to not spend a lot of money trying to remove the mirror and repair drywall, etc. we decided to just leave it and I came up with a solution that I didn’t love 100% but that I could live with since we knew that we would only be in this house temporarily. I got three of these Ikea shelving units, spray painted them gold and lined them up in the niche. They fit the area perfectly, masked the mirror fairly well and also gave me a great display area for my cake plates, vintage dishes and other decor.
My initial go at this project involved adding the paper right over the top of the mirror. I figured that with the busy pattern, it would be hardly noticeable and again, it would eliminate having to remove the giant mirror. Then as I got started I quickly realized that the adhesive on the back of the mirror had become dried out and the mirror was barely attached to the wall. So, in the end the mirror came down and it worked out even better!
Here’s a look at the niche with the wallpaper before I decorated.
To complete the space I added back in only one of the Ikea shelving units. After having three of them there for so long, I was craving a little more simplicity in the space and I also didn’t want to cover up all of this gorgeous paper!
I placed the shelves off center and then balanced it with my fiddle leaf fig tree at the other end of the cut out. In addition I hung some empty frames and vintage artwork that I already had to create a gallery wall. This also helps to balance the wall, but because most of the frames are empty, it doesn’t make it feel too heavy.
I learned a few things while working with the wallpaper that I thought would be helpful to pass along. First, this wallpaper really IS removable! It is a thicker wallpaper that has sort of a vinyl feel to it and doesn’t tear. It is super sticky and yet it actually peels right up! When I first started the project and was applying it over the mirror I had to remove and reposition the first panel a LOT (as in probably 10) times to get it right. The slight raise in depth from the mirror was making it a bit tricky. The wallpaper literally peeled right back off of the wall and the mirror without leaving any sticky residue or evidence that it was there. The paper was also still super sticky and usable even after peeling it up and reapplying it so many times!
Once I changed direction and got the mirror off of the wall, the paper went on SO quickly! I would line up the edges and unroll the backing as I applied it and it was so easy and smooth! The wallpaper comes in panels (rather than long rolls like traditional wallpaper) so it is super easy to work with! I completed this whole wall by myself in less than 2 hours.
Because of the nature of this pattern, I didn’t worry about matching the pattern on the edges. I simply lined up the next panel and went with it however the dots lined up. If you look closely you can see that some of the edges have a bit of overlap in the pattern, but in person you simply can’t tell. If it was a larger pattern or one that wouldn’t camouflage this like the dots do, I would definitely have taken the time to line up and match the pattern on the edges of each panel as I applied it. In that case, you would want to order some additional paper to compensate for some that you may have to cut off when matching the pattern. If you are a beginner, this pattern is great because it is so forgiving in that regard! Also I put my nails for the frames right through the paper and when you take them out, you can’t even see the holes, because again, the dots hide it so well. Perfect for someone like me that likes to change things up a lot!
I’m completely loving this space now and wish I hadn’t taken so long to turn it into something that is truly me! We are already spending more time in here at the formal dining table because it feels more open without all of the shelving units taking up this whole cut out space. The white in the wallpaper also brightens it up a ton and it just feels so fresh and inviting!
