Adding Dimension & Depth to a Project

Hello! I am super excited about today’s blog post because it’s all about creating texture and dimension on a project, which is something I strive to do with everything I create! A page or card or mini album just seems more inviting to me when you can see that there are layers and things coming up off the page a little. It makes me want to look closer to see all of those lovely pieces and how they were put together! Stephanie is sharing a beautiful scrapbook layout below + explaining exactly how she brings the page to life through the use of depth and dimension! 

Hi there everyone!  Stephanie back with you and today I thought I would talk a little about textures and movement on a page.  I love when I create a project that has dimension and depth.  It makes the project so inviting, and I think it also adds a fun, handmade effect as well!

When I sat down to create this page, I grabbed a pack of the vellum pieces and started sorting through the different vellum phrases.  I wanted to create some type of sewn journaling on my page, so I pulled out several of the smaller phrases that pertained to my photo and then typed out some journaling onto a piece of printer paper.  After it was typed, I trimmed down the individual phrases into strips similar to the vellum pieces.

I played around with different places on my background to add the small strips, but in the end, I decided to add them down the middle of page with several photos above it.  I used my sewing machine to stitch the different journaling/phrase pieces into place so I could lift up the edges and add a bit of movement to my layout.  (If you don’t have a sewing machine, you could achieve a similar effect by adhering the strips down just in the middle using a strong adhesive).  I think being able to lift up the edges adds such a fun visual element to the page.  It’s almost like they are floating down there at the bottom!!

For my photos, I just created several paper layers using some neutral patterned paper and a few bolder patterned papers.  I tried to pull in similar colors (orange, yellow, gold) from the bottom strips of paper to help balance my page and to tie in the top to the bottom.  I framed one of my two photos using an Open Book chipboard frame and then created an embellishment cluster to the right of the frame.

It’s a little difficult to see from the photos, but I added a little bit of texture and movement to the edges of my paper layers, as well as to the white background by bending them up a little at the edges.  This keeps the papers from seeming one dimensional and gives them a little more depth.
