a tender conversation…

tyler, matthew and i had a tender little conversation a couple of days ago that i can’t stop thinking about and want to record:

place: my scrapbook room
me: working on some scrapbooking assignments
tyler: had his patch on and was playing a game on the computer
matthew: drawing and coloring on the floor next to us

the conversation
matthew: “mom, look, i drew a picture of you, dad and me!”
me: ” wow, that is great! i love it! why don’t you draw tyler and nathan now too?”
matthew: “ok, mom….. but…… should i draw tyler with his patch on?”
me: silence…. not really knowing what to say and thinking about how aware matthew really is of the sensitivity of the whole patch situation
tyler: in the most serious and sweetest, quietest little voice “no, matthew, please don’t draw me with my patch on. just draw me with my glasses.”
matthew: “ok, tyler, but i don’t know how to draw glasses.”
tyler: “i will help you.”
me: just taking it all in, on the verge of tears, thinking about tyler and the patch and how hard this all must be for him, thinking about matthew – realizing that he is sensitive of tyler and this struggle and that it affects him too – that he is mature and aware enough to be worried about whether he should draw tyler with or without the patch on, thinking about how proud i am of them and their relationship and how happy i am that they have each other.
